Back in the 'good old days', Mr. Nicks restaurant in downtown Duluth made the best burger. I frequented it often, as I used to work virtually next door at Minnesota Surplus. Alas, through the ages, the place disappeared. The photo shows Mr. Nicks during the 1970's. (courtesy of the Duluth News Tribune newspaper archives)
During some of my pre-trip research, I heard that the Charburger survived at Ace's on 29th in Superior, Wisconsin. Of course, I had to take the challenge and see for myself.
The rumor was true...and then some.
With the aid of my car's trusty navigation system, the place was easy enough to find, but in a very obscure location. The parking lot was near filled to capacity for some volleyball event. No biggy as the bar area was merely sprinkled with customers.
I ordered the plain Charburger with breaded (not battered) onion rings. As best as I could recall, that was the standard fare I used to enjoy. Lo and behold it arrived!

The Charburger appeared a bit smaller than I remembered, and tasted about the same as it used to. In fact, it tasted better. They advertised it as Angus beef. That would explain the jump up in taste quality. I didn't mind it being smaller, as I tend to prefer smaller portions anyway. The trade up in enhanced taste was well worth it. The onion rings were identical to what I remembered.
No Coca-Cola this time. I upgraded to a Mojito. It was just "Fair". There was no muddled mint leaves. Too bad. A proper Mojito would have made the event truly epic.
In any event, if you want the old, reliable, Famous Mr. Nicks Charburger. you know where to go.
Next time, I'll have a Coke.
